How the math works
Two checks decide fit, both against the manufacturer's published dimensions:
clearance = room depth − bed depth when open (needs ≥ 24")
ceiling = cabinet height + 2" tilt margin (needs ≤ ceiling height)
Beds passing both with 30 inches or more of clearance are listed as fits. Between 24 and 30 inches is tight. If a vertical bed fails but the same model fits horizontally, we suggest the horizontal orientation.

How much clearance do you need in front of a murphy bed?
Plan for at least 24 inches of walking space beyond the bed when it is open, and 30 inches to feel comfortable. The calculator uses 24 inches as the minimum and flags anything between 24 and 30 as tight.
How far does a murphy bed stick out when open?
It depends on the mattress size and orientation. Vertical queen models typically project 85 to 90 inches from the wall. Horizontal models and cabinet beds project less. The exact open depth for every bed we track is in the spec database.
What ceiling height does a murphy bed need?
The cabinet must clear the ceiling with a small margin for tilting the bed up during installation. The calculator requires the cabinet height plus 2 inches. Standard 8 foot ceilings clear most vertical models, and horizontal models suit lower ceilings.
Where do the measurements come from?
Every dimension is read from the manufacturer of the specific bed and dated. Beds whose manufacturer does not publish open depth or cabinet height are listed separately as not checked rather than guessed at.
