How each one works
Both do the same job: counterbalance the mattress and platform so a bed that weighs well over a hundred pounds moves with fingertip effort. Gas pistons are sealed struts, the same idea as a car hatchback, sized to the bed. Spring systems use a bank of extension springs whose count you tune to the mattress weight.
Where they differ in daily use
Pistons feel smoother at the ends of travel and hold the bed wherever you let go. Springs can feel abrupt on the last few inches if unbalanced, and they creak sooner without lubrication. The flip side: when you replace your mattress with a heavier one, a spring bed rebalances with more springs, while a piston bed may need different struts if you leave its rated range.
What to check before buying

Springs have the longer track record and are rebuildable: individual springs can be added or removed to rebalance. Gas pistons wear gradually and are replaced as units. Check each manufacturer warranty, which is listed on every bed page in our database.
Do piston murphy beds need maintenance?
Very little until a piston weakens, at which point the bed feels heavier to lift and the piston gets replaced. Spring systems may need rebalancing if you change to a much heavier or lighter mattress.
Why do some murphy beds have no mechanism at all?
A few budget designs use a manual lift with no springs or pistons, trading lifting assistance for price and simplicity. They work, but you lift the full mattress weight yourself. None of the beds currently in our database are manual lift.
