Piston mechanisms generally sit in mid-range and premium beds. Solid wood costs more than laminate over MDF. And a desk, sofa or side cabinets can add more than the size jump does.

The cheap path: build the cabinet yourself

If you want the savings without the sawdust, freestanding cabinet beds are the middle option: real furniture, no wall anchoring, typically less than a comparable wall bed from the same tier.

64 of the 73 models we track publish a price, and the median among them is $3,773. That figure is more useful than any average, because this category has a long tail at the top that drags a mean upwards and describes almost nobody's purchase. The other 9 publish nothing and sell through dealers, and as a rule the quiet ones are not the cheap ones.
