DIY Murphy Bed: How the Build Actually Works

Kit or from scratch

The kit route is the sane default. You get a tested mechanism rated for a real mattress, cut lists and hardware. From-scratch builds save little, because the mechanism is the cost anyway, and free plans found online often assume a mechanism they never name. If a plan does not specify the lift hardware and its mattress weight rating, walk away.

The build in five steps

1. Cut the cabinet panels from the kit's cut list, usually two sheets of plywood for a queen.
2. Assemble the bed box and cabinet sides, square and level.
3. Mount the mechanism exactly where the plans say. This is the step to be slow on.
4. Anchor the cabinet to studs. A murphy bed is only safe anchored.
5. Load the mattress, balance the springs or pistons to it, and test the lift.

When to buy finished instead

If you need the room back this week, if the bed must look like furniture from a showroom, or if wall anchoring is off the table in a rental, a finished bed or a freestanding cabinet bed is the better spend. Compare what your money buys either way in the cost guide.
