Room fit

Murphy Bed Room Fit Calculator

A murphy bed fits your room when the open bed leaves at least 24 inches of walking space and the cabinet clears your ceiling by 2 inches for installation. Enter your measurements and we check every bed in the database against its manufacturer-published dimensions.

Enter your room and the mattress size you want. We check every bed we track against how far it comes out and how tall it stands, with 24" minimum walking clearance.

How the math works

Two checks decide fit, both against the manufacturer's published dimensions:

clearance = room depth − bed depth when open (needs ≥ 24")
ceiling = cabinet height + 2" tilt margin (needs ≤ ceiling height)

Beds passing both with 30 inches or more of clearance are listed as fits. Between 24 and 30 inches is tight. If a vertical bed fails but the same model fits horizontally, we suggest the horizontal orientation.

Where these standards come from

Two of the three numbers above are ours rather than any manufacturer's, and we would rather say so than imply an authority that does not exist. The 24 inch walking clearance and the 2 inch tilt margin are editorial standards this site chose, set where a room stops being usable rather than where the bed stops physically opening. Nobody publishes an official figure for either.

Everything else in the calculation is the manufacturer's own published dimension, carried straight from the record with its source and check date. Where a maker publishes a number only as a drawing, we leave it blank instead of measuring the picture, which is why some beds cannot be checked at all.

What this calculator cannot tell you

Of the 73 models in the database, 55 publish both the open depth and the cabinet height the check needs. 18 do not publish an open depth, and 16 do not publish a cabinet height, so those cannot be tested against your room by us or by anyone else working from public figures. They are listed separately in the results rather than quietly failed, because a missing spec is not the same as a bed that does not fit.

The check is also geometry, not installation. It does not know about your baseboards, a radiator under the window, the swing of a door, whether the wall has studs where the bracket needs them, or whether the cabinet will go up your staircase. Clear the arithmetic first, then measure the awkward bits by hand.

Frequently asked questions

How much clearance do you need in front of a murphy bed?

Plan for at least 24 inches of walking space beyond the bed when it is open, and 30 inches to feel comfortable. The calculator uses 24 inches as the minimum and flags anything between 24 and 30 as tight.

How far does a murphy bed stick out when open?

It depends on the mattress size and orientation. Vertical queen models typically project 85 to 90 inches from the wall. Horizontal models and cabinet beds project less. The exact open depth for every bed we track is in the spec database.

What ceiling height does a murphy bed need?

The cabinet must clear the ceiling with a small margin for tilting the bed up during installation. The calculator requires the cabinet height plus 2 inches. Standard 8 foot ceilings clear most vertical models, and horizontal models suit lower ceilings.

Where do the measurements come from?

Every dimension is read from the manufacturer of the specific bed and dated. Beds whose manufacturer does not publish open depth or cabinet height are listed separately as not checked rather than guessed at.

Is my room data stored?

No. The math runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted or saved.
